Description: The Sovereign Grace Believers are a contemporary movement which began its stirrings in the mid-1950s when some pastors in traditional Baptist churches returned to a Calvinist-theological perspective.
The first ?Sovereign Grace? conference was held in Ashland, Kentucky, in 1954 and since then, conferences of this sort have been sponsored by various local churches on the West Coast, Southern and Northern states and Canada. This movement is a spontaneous phenomenon concerning reformation at the local church level. Consequently, there is no interest in establishing a Sovereign Grace Baptist ?Convention? or ?Denomination.? Each local church is to administer the keys to the kingdom.
Most Sovereign Grace Believers formally or informally relate to the ?First London? (1646), ?Second London? (1689) or ?Philadelphia? (1742) Confessions.
There is a wide variety of local church government in this movement. Many Calvinist Baptists have a plurality of elders in each assembly. Other Sovereign Grace Believers, however, prefer to function with one pastor and several deacons.
Membership procedures vary from church to church but all require a credible profession of faith in Christ, and proper baptism as a basis for membership.
Calvinistic Baptists financially support gospel efforts (missionaries, pastors of small churches at home and abroad, literature publication and distribution, radio programs, etc.) in various parts of the world.
