We were Canonically established as The Holy Eastern Orthodox Catholic and Apostolic Church in North America on Feb. 2, 1927 by the Russian Syod of Bishops in North America. We were incorporated in Boston, MA in 1928 with this same name "The Holy Eastern Orthodox Catholic and Apostolic Church in North America".
Our names as listed in the 1927 Church Constitution are as follows; Our Corporate name "The Holy Eastern Orthodox Catholic and Apostolic Church in North America". Our short name from our 1927 Constitution is "American Orthodox Catholic Church".
In 2003 the North American Holy Synod declared this Church to be the "American Orthodox Patriarchate and elected Abp. Nikon to be the first Patriarch of the Church.
If you list American Orthodox Patriarchate please say "see The Holy Eastern Orthodox Catholic and Apostolic Church in North America". This is our original name and our 1928 Corporate name and we still use this name first.
Also "The Society of Clerks Secular of Saint Basil" was established by Abp. Ofiesh and Bp. Ignatius within this Church ad continues in this Church. There are a few in the independent movement who use our names improperly.
We are recognized by the Roman and Byzantine Catholics and the Episcopal Church USA who accepted one of our former priests without re-ordination. We have a letter, dated 1996, that we can provide communion to Roman Catholics within our own liturgy.
On Feb. 2, 2017 we celebrated our 90th Anniversary. The North American Holy Synod consists of 3 bishops in the U.S.
In Dec. 2009 we asked a few bishops to leave for refusing to obey the Sacred and Divine Canons as well as the canons of the Church.
It may be noted that we view certain SCOBA Orthodox as being Schismatics for the 1929 schism caused by the Archbishop of their church, their continued violations of the Canons and allowing priests to attack the good name and memory of bishops who died years ago.
Today we are mainly Western Rite.
