The Orthodox Church of America was originally under the Russian Orthodox Church which first entered Alaska (then a Russian territory) in 1794. Alaska was purchased by the United States in 1867 and the Church remained under the Russian Orthodox Church and spread throughout North America. The headquarters was moved to San Francisco and then to New York. It was granted autocephaly (independence)by the Russian Orthodox Church, on April 10, 1970, and was renamed the Orthodox Church in America. It currently has 14 dioceses in the United States, Canada and Mexico. The Headquarters and residence of the Metropolitan are located in Oyster Bay Cove, New York.
